Specialmoves presents a ‘Call to Arms’. We believe in digital experiences that make people happier or more productive. Our inspiration comes not just from the digital agency bubble but well beyond. So we’ve pulled together some friends, co-conspirators and people that inspire us. To see what they’re working on, to broaden our horizons and hear their Call to Arms.
Katy Beale, Director, Caper
Caper runs Culture Hack, a format where tech and culture sectors come together to exchange expertise and collaborate, developing low-risk prototypes and sharing open data. This year, Culture Hack comes to London, Edinburgh and Leeds in the UK, and Atlanta in the USA. Katy is co-founder of Coding for Kids, a new support and lobbying movement that aims to improve the teaching of computer programming to British children. She has just published a book about games and interaction in 40+ museums called "Museums at Play". Her talk will focus on digital disruption and innovation.

Ben James, CD of Jotta
Jotta is a community of emerging artists and designers. Ben works with partners to devise creative projects that tap into this talent. He'll talk to us about the giant hyper-holographic 3d film experience they created for Lattitude, the ambitious Intel Remastered Project and about working with textiles futures students from Central Saint Martins. Essentially, Ben's interested in how new technologies offer new opportunities to the artist / designer who in return, provide ever-evolving experiences and contexts to our relationship with technology.
Ciaran Park, Specialmoves
Responsive design is changing the way we create and experience interactivity. Ciaran, one of our talented front-end developers, will share what we’ve learnt through building our new site, some best practice inspiration and thoughts on the shape of things to come.

Gareth Neal, furniture maker
Gareth is one of the country’s most talented contemporary furniture designer makers. Working predominantly in traditional materials such as wood, his practice often involves the fusion of craft, design and technology to subvert the norms. He lectures about Design and Craft, was recently commissioned by Wallpaper as part of Milan Design Week and has exhibited at the V&A, Saatchi Gallery and The Design Museum, Israel. His talk will focus on how digital is changing his practice.
Jane ni Dhulchaointigh, inventor of sugru
Jane was studying product design at RCA London when she had an idea: "I don't want to buy new stuff all the time. I want to hack the stuff I already have so it works better for me." So she phoned some clever materials scientists called Ian and Steve and together they invented an interesting new material for hacking things better. It's called sugru and is a little bit brilliant. In fact, Time Magazine voted it one of 50 best inventions of 2010. It looks like Play-Doh, acts like Super Glue and transforms into brightly coloured silicone rubber. Jane will tell the story of sugru, from an idea to a repairing revolution.
Young guns
This chunk of the night is to give students and ‘green’ industry talent a platform to be seen and heard. To hear what they’ve got to say & get inspired by the next generation of interactive folk coming through. So it’s open brief – 3 mins to share something interesting.
Speakers include: James, a student at Hyper Island, Mike from Young Creative Council and Jonny from ShellsuitZombies.
On top of this you’ll get free entry, 3 free drinkies and tunes from our very own Christophe. And make sure you look pretty...our friends at D&AD will be filming the night.
See you there!
